Fractal 267 by Cross Stitch Collectibles

Art-to-stitch conversion Wednesday.  I really should come up with a better name for this – any ideas?

Cross Stitch Collectibles - Fractal 267 Time Swirl

What is it?

Fractal 267 was created by PureGuitarFury, who added it to the royalty-free image site Dreamstime where it was picked up and converted to cross stitch by Cross Stitch Collectibles.

Why this chart?

Fractal 267 was one of the first art-to-stitch patterns I bought. Anyone who watches Doctor Who or the old Time Tunnel program can see why.

Most art-to-stitch designs are fully stitched, in that the background is treated as part of the picture so every square is stitched, culminating in a project comprising thousands of stitches and months if not years to work.

This particular design uses mainly white, winter white and black with 21 shades of grey to give depth and definition to the project.  If you use a fabric that is white, winter white or black, you can skip those stitches saving you a lot of time.

I stayed away from art-to-stitch designs for many years; I am wary of buying from sellers who grab a popular image, run it through a conversion program and sell it for a few dollars.  Unless the picture is in the public domain, this is illegal as well as producing a sub-standard chart.

Cross Stitch Collectibles use fractal designs from royalty-free image sites such as dreamstime, and they clearly spend much time and effort to produce a clean chart.

Fractal 267 is a simple design, it is full cross stitch in DMC only; a beginner has the skills to stitch it. However, this is a design that will take a long time to complete, so settle yourself in for the journey.

Cross Stitch Collectibles offer their charts via DVD, electronic download or in printed form. I have only received Cross Stitch Collectible charts in digital format, so that is what I am reviewing. Fractal 267 is a 34 page chart pack in pdf format. Save the design and you can work from the digital chart or print sections as you need, or print it all and store it with the rest of your paper charts; the options are yours.

The Fractal 267 digital download contains:

  • front cover sheet with original artwork, stitch count and finished sizes for standard fabric counts
  • the symbol key or legend, including the number of skeins needed for each thread
  • instructions on how to stitch such a large project and a diagram of where the pages sit in relation to each other
  • Care and Washing Instructions (via DMC)
  • the 30 page chart

This design has large swathes of white and black; however running this design through an art-to-stitch computer program would create a pattern littered with single stitches of almost white or almost black. It is testament to Cross Stitch Collectibles 17 years experience in this field, that their charts are not like this.  They have gone through the computer generated pattern and changed these swathes back to complete black or white to offer a cleaner pattern and more striking finished project.

The chart is printed with black symbols on white paper.  Cross Stitch Collectibles use a small dot for Black DMC 310, however all the other floss colours use capital letters as the symbols.  As these letters are all the same height and similar width it is often difficult to identify between them; take E and F as an example of symbols used side by side. I would recommend enlarging the chart for clearer readability between symbols.

There are no overlap rows between the pages so you can stitch in rows of 10 stitches across the page, stitch on Magic Guide fabric or grid your fabric or count carefully.  Most stitchers use a combination of these techniques.

Fractal 267 is a full-stitched chart; the finished project is wall-to wall stitching with no fabric showing (except the amount you leave for framing).  As such you can stitch on any fabric that you choose. You could stitch this on white fabric so to skip the white stitches if you chose.
