Free Designs: Stickuele

Today we have a German designer who is running an Advent Calendar Mystery stitchalong and offers free designs daily.  Also don’t forget the giveaway for Let’s Do Coffee.

What is it?

To set the mood for a good weekend, we have Freebie Fridays; each week presenting a different designer.  All sites listed here design their own charts. These designs are copyright to the designers, please do not abuse their generosity.

Why this designer?

Renate at Stickuele writes almost daily about her stitching and general life. At the end of every post she provides a small free design.  These designs are perfect for cross stitch cards and one night projects for gifts and ornaments.  Renate has tagged all her free designs so you can find the relevant blog posts in one place.

She is also runs an Advent Calendar Mystery SAL annually.  No sign ups, no hassles – she just puts up one part of the chart daily. You can stitch along or collect the pieces for later or just watch in admiration and try to guess what the final design will be. Here’s the SAL announcement with all the information you need.

Renate’s blog is in German but google translate is enough for me to follow each story. I do urge you read her blog as she mentions some great designs and stitchalongs that she participates in.

Renate’s free charts are only available via her blog Stickuele, and her annual Mystery Advent Calendar stitchalongs via her other blog Stickueles Freebies.  I recommend subscribing so you don’t miss any new releases. Otherwise bookmark her site and visit it regularly to be inspired for designs to stitch as gifts.

Each post on her blog has a free chart, some are shown in a variety of colour choices; these are shown as small images. Clicking on these will show a pop-out of a  larger file which can be saved. How to save the file is dependent up on which device you are using. On a PC, you right-click on the image and select “save image”. All of the images save as .jpg image files.

Some of Renate’s charts such as Dove Ornament above include a floss key. Others such as the Reindeer and the Two Owls do not include floss keys. These are stitched with a minimum of colours and you are expected to choose your own floss.  Some designs, such as the Two Owls are shown in a variety of colours to spark your imagination.

Renate uses a large grid and very easy to see and easy to distinguish floss symbols. She does however, use floss symbols on a coloured background. While this makes it very easy to determine the right colour floss, it makes it difficult to mark off your progress.  If you wish to print out these designs, you will need a colour printer, as the dark colour backgrounds make it difficult to see the symbols if printed in shades of grey.

Like all similar small and sparsely coloured charts, you can easily swap out the DMC for hand dyed floss or add metallic floss or beads or change the background fabric; so many ways to personalise your project.
