What is it?

To set the mood for a good weekend, we have Freebie Fridays; each week presenting a different designer.  All sites listed here design their own charts. These designs are copyright to the designers, please do not abuse their generosity.

When sharing knowledge of a free design, please link back to the designer’s original page. Do not just copy and share the pattern. The designers offer these free from monetary payment; we “pay” for them by visiting the designer’s site, seeing (or purchasing) their other designs, commenting on their blogs and pages and showing them our stitching of their designs.  Please do not take and not give back.

From the Designer

Hi everyone my name is Lynn and I would like to welcome you to my blog, Happiness is Cross Stitching. I love to make and create lots of things and I thought it would be nice to share some of my projects with you all.

I have been married to my darling husband for over thirty years and I have one son who has made us very proud parents.

I love all types of crafts including cross stitch, crochet, knitting, dressmaking,  polymer clay, card making, in fact as many types  of crafts that I can get my hands on!

I have given away many of my cross stitch pieces through give-aways on my blog and I offer many free cross stitch patterns for my readers to download.

Why this designer?

Lynn B is into crafts of all sorts, so she not only offers some great small designs, she also has tutorials in how to finish them off. Whether they be the scissors fobs or the Toblerone needlecase or a covered box, Lynn shows each step of the process.

I love Lynn’s designs, from the elegance of the Edwardian Lady’s Parasol to the Northern Hemisphere monthly cat series, to some lovely sentimental sayings, Lynn truly has something for everyone.

Many of Lynn’s cross stitch designs are very simple to stitch, but she offers embellishments and finishing techniques that can take you out of your comfort zone to try something new.  For this I recommend her blogs for everyone, from a complete beginner to an experienced stitcher.  You can find something as easy or as challenging as you like.

Review

Almost of Lynn B’s designs can be found for free on her blog Happiness is Cross Stitching.  All of her finishing tutorials are available for free on her blog Lynn B’s Cross Stitch Tutorials.  She offers a lot of knowledge and artistic ability for free.

However, for those who like their charts a little more neatly presented and with more information, Lynn also sells some of her patterns online via Craftsy.

Take for example this pattern of a mini cat surrounded by presents.

Mini Christmas Cat 2014
Mini Christmas Cat 2014

The free chart is a single page .jpg image file.  The chart uses symbols on a coloured background, but there is no symbol key listed; this encourages you to choose your own floss, perhaps using leftover threads from other projects.

The free chart does not include a stitch count or give any fabric recommendations. However the chart does use numbered grid lines; you can use the grid numbers to determine the stitch count and the size of the design on your chosen fabric. The design is a mix of whole cross stitch and backstitch so can be stitched on any fabric that suits you.

The Craftsy chart is a seven page PDF file.  The front page has an image of the design, stitched and turned into a flat fold.

The second page has the stitch count, the size of the finished design on 14ct fabric, a symbol key for the cross stitching, backstitch and French knots and lastly a list of number of skeins needed for each floss colour.

The third page is a chart of the design. Identical to the free chart on the blog, this chart uses symbols on a coloured background. The symbols match the symbol key o the previous page.

The fourth page is the same chart, but with the coloured backgrounds and no symbols.

The fifth page is the same chart, this time in black symbols on a white background. The backstitch lines are still in colour.

The last two pages are cross stitching instructions for beginners.

If you have a stash of floss and fabrics, have some experience at cross stitching and are comfortable choosing your own colours, then you only need the free designs.

If you would like to thank the designer in a monetary way, if you want to stitch the chart in the exact colours that Lynn chose, or if you have a definite preference for coloured or non-coloured charts, then Craftsy is the way to go.
