What is it?

To set the mood for a good weekend, we have Freebie Fridays; each week presenting a different designer.  All sites listed here design their own charts. These designs are copyright to the designers, please do not abuse their generosity.

When sharing knowledge of a free design, please link back to the designer’s original page. Do not just copy and share the pattern. The designers offer these free from monetary payment; we “pay” for them by visiting the designer’s site, seeing (or purchasing) their other designs, commenting on their blogs and pages and showing them our stitching of their designs.  Please do not take and not give back.

About the Designer

Stoyanka is from Bulgaria – a beautiful country in south-eastern Europe. She is an architect and a chief assistant – professor in the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy in Sofia, Bulgaria, where she teaches courses on Programming, Computer Graphic and Computer Aided Design.

In the same time she draws since she was a little girl. Now she is excited of the history, the beauty of the ancient art and this is the main object of some of her artworks. Some of them are in private collections in Bulgaria and Europe, and she adapted other part of them to cross-stitch designs, which are very popular among the stitchers in the world. As a needlework designer she found a way to share her love to the Art with many other people.

This year her name and pastel works were listed in the book ‘BEST OF WORLDWIDE ARTISTS working in Charcoal, Pastel & Pencil – Volume I’ by Kennedy Publishing ( ).

Why this designer?

Stoyanka sells most of her designs via printed charts and kits on her Solaria Gallery website or electronically via Patterns Online.   Her free designs are representative of her different art subjects.  If you like any of her designs, you should be able to find a freebie that shows you how Stoyanka converts her art to cross stitch.

I love the Solaria Gallery free designs because they are small and yet so beautiful.  Many are suitable for cards or biscornus, while others create beautiful framed pieces.

I have long admired her unique portrait style and after reviewing her free designs, I might just have to purchase medieval princess or Scheherazade.

Finally, her website is beautifully arrayed and easily understandable in English, Bulgarian or Russian.

The most recent free designs are available on the Free Designs page of the Solaria Gallery website.  If you want any of her older free designs, these can be sent out to you when you buy one of her printed charts or kits.

To open and download the free designs:

  1. Click on the small picture of the design you are interested in
  2. This opens up another window, click on the gold “Download PDF Pattern” button.
  3. This will open the PDF file. Save the file in your usual way; on a PC that is right-click “save as”, on a tablet, hold your finger down on the PDF.

The art to stitch designs have a cover page showing a small computer mock-up of the design, the stitch count, a diagram of how the chart pages fit together and a combined list of DMC floss needed for the design and symbol key.

The chart is provided using black symbols on a white background. The symbols are very easily to distinguish and are printed quite large and very easy to see.  There are no overlap rows between the pages, but the grid is marked out in a 10-stitch numbered grid to help you keep your place.

Monochrome designs do not offer a colour option, you are expected to select your own floss and fabric colours.  The symbols used on these is quite easy to see.

Smaller designs (usually under 80 x 80 stitches) list everything on the same page; a very small computer mock-up of the design, the stitch count, stitch instructions and a combined list of DMC floss and symbol key.

Most of the designs, large and small are whole cross stitch only.  The main exception being the blackwork designs which are in backstitch.

I think this gorgeous spray looks lovely on Halcyon which itself reminds me of hyacinths….bring on the spring!”
