Hello, Tiffstitch here, and I really enjoy cross-stitching to relax after a stressful day and I love being able to create something that can be beautiful, funky, subversive, or anything at all.
About the Designer
Although Angel Stitchin is a new designer to me, she has been designing since 1996 and went to her first Needlework Market in 1997. Squiggle Tree is from 2005 and is a variant on the traditional Christmas tree design.
Why This Chart?
I found this chart at my Local Needlework Store (LNS) and it grabbed my attention with the funky tree design and the simple colour palette. I’ve loved stitching Christmas themed designs since I started cross-stitching and 20 years of life later I’d rather stitch something non-traditional. Also, since I tend to leave holiday gift stitching until the last minute, this seemed to be the perfect, easy finish chart.
This chart has only 3 colours and hand-dyed floss is recommended. It uses straight cross-stitch without any specialty stitches. This would be an easy, fun stitch to use up some of your stashed threads and fabric, and it is easily adaptable to any colour palette. The simple design can be stitched many ways and would be as easy for a beginner as it would be for an advanced stitcher. I would recommend this to anyone, whether they’ve used hand-dyed threads before or not.
The only special instructions listed by Angel Stitchin is to recommend completing the hand dyed floss stitches as you go to take advantage of the hand dyed threads.
Squiggle Tree is only sold as a printed chart pack. It is not kitted or sold as a digital download. The chart is on a single page of 8.5 x 11 (close to A4) folded in half. The front page has an actual photograph of the finished model. The back page includes all the information you need to kit up this project including the colours used in the model, the finished dimensions and even where to find the quirky frame used to finish the model.
The chart is black and white symbols only and Angel Stitchin chose easily distinguishable symbols. The colours are so separate that almost isn't necessary, but it shows good attention to detail and consideration for the stitcher. As this is a small chart, only one page is necessary and it’s printed large enough that a working copy isn’t needed.
I decided to write this review because I loved this chart since the first day I started stitching it. I’m not sure if it’s because of the nice large, easily differentiated chart symbols, or the ease of Weeks Dye Works on my choice of 14 count aida or how quickly it has stitched up, but it’s been entirely enjoyable since I started. I may jinx myself now, but I haven’t even had to unpick anything. I finished Squiggle Tree after a week of stitching 1-3 hours per day.
