Avantgarde 1 by UB Design

Something a little different today, a classic fashion design by a German designer.

UB Designs - Avantgarde 1 Cover

What is it?

Avantgarde 1 is a cross stitch design of a female mannequin in avant-garde clothing by Ulrike Blotzheim of UB design.

Why this chart?

I’ve only recently heard about UB Design. As a lover of historical fashion iconography, I had to buy this chart first from his collection. UB Design has a diverse range of patterns and books available on all manner of subjects.

The UB Design eshop also sells any specialised materials, floss, and accessories recommended in the designs.

The chart instructions are written in German only. however DMC colour numbers and floss symbols are universal.  Google Translate easily led me through the few chart-specific instructions.

Avantgarde 1 is whole cross stitch only, in DMC with blended threads and metallics, stitched 2 over 2 on a linen band.  I would recommend this design for a beginner through to advanced stitchers; anybody who loves the design.

UB Designs - Avantgarde 1

All UB design charts are available as printed chart packs only.  Each has a red stamp on the last page which reads “UB-STICKDESIGN Original Stickvorlage” to denote that you are purchasing a legal, legitimate chart.

The chart pack is in A4 (US letter) size pages inside a plastic self-adhesive sleeve.  The cover is a glossy light cardstock with an image of the completed framed design.

The chart is shown over four pages; the fourth page also has the floss symbol keys in both DMC and Anchor and the chart specific instructions (design is stitched 2 over 2).

The chart is on a 10 x 10 grid, but the grid is not numbered nor are there any overlap-rows between the pages.  The chart is a little small for my preference, but someone with better eyesight could stitch directly from the chart just fine.

The chart does not list the complete stitch count, or the middle point of the design.  If you buy the linen band from the designer and are happy to stitch up from the bottom row (as per the chart specific instructions) then you wouldn’t need to know the full stitch count or middle point of the fabric.  However, as many stitchers like to choose their own fabric and where to start stitching from, this information would be best displayed on all charts.

The final page is the usual back page of the chart.  It lists the other great information we want to see on a back page; the material used in the model stitch, the DMC floss used, including number of skeins needed, the Anchor equivalent, the Madeira gold metallic, even where you can buy the mat and frame.

Materials Required

To stitch the charts exactly as designed, you will need:

2 skeins DMC 721 Medium Orange Spice

DMC 900 Dark Burnt Orange

4 skeins DMC 900 Dark Burnt Orange

Madeira Metallic 20 Col 2024 Gold

Madiera #20 Metallic  2024 Gold Thread (can be easily replaced with any god metallic of your choice)

Vaupel & Keilenbeck 28ct Natural/Raw Linen Band 34 x 110cm or 14″ x 43″.

Fabric Recommended for Avantgarde 1, lying across my bed.

Stitch count is 85 x 377 . This design can be stitched over 2 or over 1.  For 14ct Aida or 28 count Evenweave (stitched over 2, with a 3″ border allowance) fabric size is: 12” x 33”  or  30 x 84cm or  a fat half (27 x 36″).

I assume the extra fabric allowance on the recommended linen band is if you wish to hang this as bell pull.
