Today we have a German designer who is running an Advent Calendar Mystery stitchalong and offers free designs daily.  Also don’t forget the giveaway for Let’s Do Coffee.

What is it?

To set the mood for a good weekend, we have Freebie Fridays; each week presenting a different designer.  All sites listed here design their own charts. These designs are copyright to the designers, please do not abuse their generosity.

Stickuele - Dove Ornament
Stickuele – Dove Ornament

Why this designer?

Renate at Stickuele writes almost daily about her stitching and general life. At the end of every post she provides a small free design.  These designs are perfect for cross stitch cards and one night projects for gifts and ornaments.  Renate has tagged all her free designs so you can find the relevant blog posts in one place.

She is also runs an Advent Calendar Mystery SAL annually.  No sign ups, no hassles – she just puts up one part of the chart daily. You can stitch along or collect the pieces for later or just watch in admiration and try to guess what the final design will be. Here’s the SAL announcement with all the information you need.

Renate’s blog is in German but google translate is enough for me to follow each story. I do urge you read her blog as she mentions some great designs and stitchalongs that she participates in.

Review

Renate’s free charts are only available via her blog Stickuele, and her annual Mystery Advent Calendar stitchalongs via her other blog Stickueles Freebies.  I recommend subscribing so you don’t miss any new releases. Otherwise bookmark her site and visit it regularly to be inspired for designs to stitch as gifts.

Each post on her blog has a free chart, some are shown in a variety of colour choices; these are shown as small images. Clicking on these will show a pop-out of a  larger file which can be saved. How to save the file is dependent up on which device you are using. On a PC, you right-click on the image and select “save image”. All of the images save as .jpg image files.

Some of Renate’s charts such as Dove Ornament above include a floss key. Others such as the Reindeer and the Two Owls do not include floss keys. These are stitched with a minimum of colours and you are expected to choose your own floss.  Some designs, such as the Two Owls are shown in a variety of colours to spark your imagination.

Renate uses a large grid and very easy to see and easy to distinguish floss symbols. She does however, use floss symbols on a coloured background. While this makes it very easy to determine the right colour floss, it makes it difficult to mark off your progress.  If you wish to print out these designs, you will need a colour printer, as the dark colour backgrounds make it difficult to see the symbols if printed in shades of grey.

Like all similar small and sparsely coloured charts, you can easily swap out the DMC for hand dyed floss or add metallic floss or beads or change the background fabric; so many ways to personalise your project.

What is it?

To set the mood for a good weekend, I thought we would have Freebie Fridays; each week presenting a different designer.  All sites listed here design their own charts. These designs are copyright to the designers, please do not abuse their generosity.

Why this designer?

Cyberstitchers isn’t a designer so much as a group of designers all sharing their work and knowledge.  Although not that active now, Cyberstitchers has helped cross-stitchers worldwide since 2003.  There is a wealth of information on the website that is still very useful today including Free Patterns, a collection of illustrated Finishing Techniques, Message Boards for you to ask questions, Charity Listings to help you find a cause to support with your stitching, the searchable Cross Stitch Patterns Directory to help you find the next project to stitch, and a variety of Stitching Tools to help with your projects.

Cyberstitchers free designs are all available on the Cyberstitchers free Designs page. Some of them are also available on the designer’s own home page, but that differs for each designer.

Cyberstitchers - pattern page
Cyberstitchers – pattern page

On the Cyberstitchers free page, each design has three download formats:

  • .PAT format is a pattern format used by PCStitch computer program, you can download a free PCStitch Viewer to open these files.
  • .MCPAT format was created by myriaCross.com; many differing stitching programs use this format.
  • .PDF (Portable Document Format) is a file format that has captured all the elements of a printed document as an electronic image that you can view, navigate, print, or forward to someone else. PDF files are created using Adobe Acrobat , Acrobat Capture, or similar products. You can download the free Adobe PDF Viewer to open these files.  Many e-readers can also read .pdf files making this the most versatile format of the three options.
When Someone you Love by Lorraine Clarke
When Someone you Love by Lorraine Clarke

Most of the designs on CyberStitchers free page are under 150 x 150 stitch count and composed of only a few colours.  The .pdf patterns print out as two pages.  Page one is the chart, the second page lists the author, stitch count, recommend fabric, fabric size for that fabric and the floss key.

The larger charts can feel a little squished when printed out as one page.  You may wish to work these designs directly from your laptop or tablet where it is easy to increase the grid size. Cyberstitchers use floss symbols on a coloured background; it is easy to distinguish the right colour floss, but this does make it difficult if you wish to mark off your progress.  If you wish to print out these designs, you will need a colour printer, as the dark colour backgrounds make it difficult to see the symbols if printed in shades of grey.

Many of these charts can be easily customised to stitch in hand dyed floss or add metallic floss or beads or change the background fabric.

Chupin’s Xstitch

Free designs for Freebie Friday. Also don’t forget to check out the November Sales post as it is being updated multiple times a day! There are some massive sales going on now.

Chupin - Tis the Season

What is it?

To set the mood for a good weekend, I also thought we would have Freebie Fridays; each week presenting a different designer.  All sites listed here design their own charts. These designs are copyright to the designers, please do not abuse their generosity.

Why this designer?

Claire isn’t as prolific as some of the other designer’s we have reviewed, but I really love her work. I love that her small bookmarks and ornaments are designed in a variety of languages.  I love the ambiance of her small critter and fantasy creature work.

Chupin - detective-bookmarks1

Claire offers her charts free via her website Claire93’s Blog; a general stitching and lifestyle blog.  Occasionally Claire offers a free design and this is placed on her Free Chupin’s Xstitch Charts page.

Claire’s charts are small but beautiful; there is a lovely range of gifts to stitch here for any reader or ornament lover. I recommend her designs for pure beginners through to advanced stitchers.

Cannelle

Review

Claire’s free charts are only available via her Free Chupin’s Xstitch Charts page.  As her designing is not to any schedule, I recommend subscribing to her blog so you don’t miss any new releases.

All of her free designs are on the one page, Free Chupin’s Xstitch Charts page.  The link for each chart is listed above the picture. Click on the link and a pdf file opens. Save the pdf file to your device.

Most of Claire’s designs are either monochrome or only a few colours and for these she provides the chart, but no floss list.  The intent is that these designs are adaptable so you choose your own colours. Claire uses large grids but each design prints out to a single A4 or US Letter sized  sheet of paper.

Like all similarly simple-coloured charts, you can easily stitch these designs in hand dyed floss or add metallic floss or beads or change the background fabric; so many ways to personalise your project.

chupin - sleeping dragon

In the rare case that a floss colour palette is needed,  Claire provides a floss list on a second page; using symbols on a coloured background.  These floss symbol backgrounds are in bright opaque colours. It is quite easy to distinguish the right colour floss, but this does make it difficult if you wish to mark off your progress.  If you wish to print out these designs, you will need a colour printer, as the dark colour backgrounds make it difficult to see the symbols if printed in shades of grey.

What is it?

To set the mood for a good weekend, I also thought we would have Freebie Fridays; each week presenting a different designer.  All sites listed here design their own charts. These designs are copyright to the designers, please do not abuse their generosity.

Why this designer?

Corinne is another French designer who offers her charts free via her website PassionBrode77. She blogs about her cross stitch including Stitchalongs (SALs) that she arranges or participates in, stitching gifts she receives and offers a new free design daily!

She has quite helpfully arranged all her free designs into themed categories so you can easily find a design in any category you like.

Corinne’s blog is in French but google translate is enough for me to follow each story. I do urge you read her blog as she mentions other great designers.

Corinne’s designs are easy to stitch due to large blocks of the same colour. It is the quirkiness and variety of designs that is so tempting. I would recommend beginners to experienced stitchers alike to peruse Corinne’s themes as there is sure to be design or two to tempt you.

Corinne’s free charts are only available via her blog.  I recommend subscribing so you don’t miss any new releases. Otherwise bookmark her site and visit it regularly to be inspired for designs to stitch as gifts.  Also please send her photographs of any designs you stitch; knowing people use these charts is her motivation to continue to design.

Each post on her blog has one or more free charts; these are shown as small images. Clicking on these will show a pop-out of a  larger file which can be saved. How to save the file is dependent up on which device you are using. On a PC, you right-click on the image and select “save image”. All of the images save as .jpg image files.

Corinne’s designs are very easy to read; she uses colours instead of symbols, but the colours are very easy to distinguish and each is paired to a DMC floss.  Corinne uses large grids but each design prints out to a single A4 or US Letter sized  sheet of paper.

Like all similarly simple-coloured charts, you can easily swap out the DMC for hand dyed floss or add metallic floss or beads or change the background fabric; so many ways to personalise your project.
